Six minutes later the tactical teams arrived in three cube vans, plowing through large puddles in the road left by the earlier rain. They parked across the street from Norman Stravinskyâs address, the location of the RAKER-M as reported by a patrol car on its rounds that had passed by earlier. Sergeant Taylor was the first out of his vehicle, followed by a heavily-armed squad from the vans. They carried submachine guns and were wearing body armor. Some were wearing night vision goggles. Over the next few seconds several regular police patrol cars pulled up at each end of the block, keeping traffic out and securing the area.
The street was well lit, but the moisture on the sidewalks and road made it dark.
Plato was standing motionless outside Stravinsky's apartment building to the left of the main entrance. There was a man standing nearby, to the right of the entrance, smoking a cigarette.
âCarry out the orders I sent earlier,â Taylor said to Walker. âRemind the men that the android can hear your voices. It might even be able to break the encryption on all our electronic communications. It can damn well monitor our Raims.â
Walker knelt down beside a patrol car with the SWAT team leader, out of view of the RAKER, and uncovered a small, old-fashioned whiteboard. On the way, he had pre-drawn the buildings in the vicinity, and he now added representations of the RAKER and where he wanted the men positioned. The squad leader nodded, stood up, and with his back to the RAKER used hand signals to deploy his team.
When the leader gave the âGoâ signal, the six man tac team ran to cover the RAKER from both sides. Two snipers entered the low-rise building behind the vehicles to position themselves on the rooftop of the apartment building across the street. Taylor looked first at the RAKER, then at the man standing a few paces to the right. He grabbed the bullhorn from the officer kneeling behind the patrol car in front of him.
âSir, you are standing against the building wall several paces to the RAKERâs left! Keep your hands where we can see them, and surrender to the police. Extend your arms to yours sides. Shoulder height. Palms forward. Walk towards my position slowly. Do it now!â
The man looked at Plato, then dropped his cigarette, stomping it out with a twist of his foot. He did as instructed and walked towards Taylor. When he was halfway across the street two tactical officers ran out from either side to meet him, grasping his upper arms and escorting him quickly to their commander. They patted the man down as Taylor addressed him.
âWho are you, and what do you know about that android?â
âMy name is Charles Boyd. I'm employed as Dr. Norman Stravinsky's driver. That RAKER-M is the personal bodyguard to Dr. Stravinsky.â
âThis is all that he was carrying,â said one of the officers as he handed Taylor a pack of cigarettes and lighter.
âIs Dr. Stravinsky inside the building?â
âYes, in his apartment.
